Giving thanks for Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving celebrations are taking place across the US - the holiday when people travel across the country to sit down for a turkey dinner, or a vegetarian or vegan alternative, with their families. But are political divisions getting in the way of tradition?Â
Jon Sopel reflects on his last Thanksgiving as the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's North America editor before he returns to the UK. He reflects on past Thanksgivings in the US, since he took up the role in 2014, and how recent debates around topics such as abortion, migration, gun control and election results, have soured relations that used to be cordial and close - "toxic divisions have come to the fore this year". He wonders what it would take to unite Americans today.
