Some Iraqi migrants at Belarus-Poland border choose to fly home
Hundreds of migrants have gathered at the Belarus-Poland border in the hope of crossing into the EU. But as the border remains closed, the weather turns colder and the opportunity to claim asylum in Europe fades, some migrants from Iraq are accepting the option of repatriation. They are taking government-organised flights from Minsk home to Baghdad or Erbil, a city in the autonomous Kurdish region.
Jourrnalist Daphne Wesdorp spoke to Newsday from Erbil airport. She explains that although conditions in Iraq are difficult for many different reasons - forcing desperate citizens to leave their homes and seek better lives abroad - the situation at the border is so bad they feel have no choice but to go home. "His voice was full of defeat" she said of one man she spoke to who had decided to fly home.
