Belarus migrant crisis: 'We are defending EU borders'
Poland and Lithuania have both strengthened border security in response to thousands of migrants massing on the Belarusian side.
Lithuania has entered a state of emergency in the last few hours in a bid to stop a potentially huge influx of illegal immigrants from Afghanistan, Africa and the Middle East. The European Union accuses the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, of exploiting desperate people to create a border crisis for the EU - in revenge for sanctions against his administration over human rights. Mr Lukashenko denies this.
The state of emergency bill was supported by Lithuania's parliament. Meanwhile, in Poland, groups of migrants are said to have broken through fences. Dovile Sakaliene MP is vice-chair of Lithuanian Social Democratic Party and sits on the National Security and Defence Committee. She explained to Newsday why she backed the bill.
鈥淚t was a difficult decision. But Belarus is expanding the scale of human smuggling, importing thousands of migrants per day鈥 and we have intel and proof that Belarus military is guiding them to our borders.鈥
鈥淲e can鈥檛 help Lukashenko鈥檚 regime make chaos in the EU. He鈥檚 using them (the migrants) as live shields... herding these migrant groups near our border like livestock.鈥
