Algeria is counting the cost of devastating wildfires that ravaged the country in recent weeks. At least 90 people died fighting the fires and despite the devastation - and the wider damage to the Mediterranean region from wildfires - the Algerian government is not talking about climate change.

Maher Mezahi is a journalist based in Algiers. He told Newsday: 鈥淣ow the narrative has shifted to counting losses and holding people accountable.鈥�

鈥淎lgeria is not equipped with amphibious firefighting airplanes. It has now ordered 5 Russian ones but it is too little too late. Ordinary citizens were trying to put out the fires. Most people were using branches, shovels, water tanks, whatever they could to help put out the fires. The people that I spoke to felt abandoned.鈥�
