The rediscovered Fernandina giant tortoise
The Galapagos, the volcanic Pacific archipelago famed for its diverse wildlife, has once again delivered a great moment for researchers. An elderly female giant tortoise has just been confirmed as being from a species thought to be extinct. The last sighting of the Chelonoidis phantasticus, also known as the 'Fernandina giant tortoise', was in 1906 and scientists believe there may be more living in the wild on Fernandina Island. James Gibbs is Professor of Vertebrate Conservation and Adjunct scientist, Galapagos Conservancy.
