Is science fiction too white?

The Marvel superhero movie Black Panther broke many barriers: it had a predominantly black cast, it won three Oscars and it was the highest grossing domestic film of 2018. It also made the genre it draws from, Afrofuturism, become mainstream. But when it comes to diversifying the science fiction scene, have things changed?

N.K. Jemisin is an African-American psychologist and science fiction writer. Her Broken Earth trilogy won the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years in a row. She’s the first and only author to have achieved that recognition. She discusses the structural problems within the sci-fi industry and where she would like to see the genre going in the future.
