Classics with NOW: Beethoven 'Leonore: Overture No. 3'
On this day in 1805, Beethoven’s opera ‘Fidelio’ premiered. Following the premiere, Beethoven revised the opera and ended up writing four overtures for it.
Beethoven soon realised that his ‘Leonore: Overture No. 3’ was too grand and strong to act as an introduction to the opera. A rich and compelling musical portrayal of the story of the opera, ‘Leonore: Overture No. 3’ is now often performed in the concert hall as a standalone piece.
In the year celebrating 250 years of Beethoven, we just had to include this piece as part of Classics with NOW! Enjoy this performance from 24/03/2007 at William Aston Hall, Wrexham, with conductor Grant Llewellyn.
