America's first black Roman Catholic cardinal

The United States will have its first African American Roman Catholic cardinal in November, after Pope Francis elevated the Archbishop of Washington, Wilton Gregory, to the role along with 12 others. The move is symbolically significant in the Roman Catholic Church in America, where black people have been under-represented among the leadership.
