From regaining her vote to being denied it a second time

Amendment 4,passed in November 2018 in Florida, restored the voting rights of Floridians convicted on a felony

charge. But then in 2019, the Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, instituted a law that requires that people with felony records to pay all fines and fees associated with their sentence prior to the restoration of their voting rights. Mr DeSantis' critics claim this was a deliberate attempt to sabotage Amendment 4 - perhaps as a way of keeping a large number of black citizens off the voters' roll for good.

Betty Riddle was convicted of a felony back in the Seventies when she was just 17 years old. After Amendment 4 was passed she managed one vote, in the presidential primaries, before the costs-and-fines ruling came down.
