Featured Artist: Sola
The captivating Croydon-based producer and singer Sola is this week's Featured Artist.
Hailing from Croydon, Sola is the monika and Yoruba name of singer and producer Priscilla Bajamo. Self-described as warped-soul, Sola draws on the sonic landscapes of R&B, classic soul and electronica to create a sound that is ethereal, experimental and utterly entrancing. Blending sumptuous beats and deep vocals with sharp electronic productions, Sola makes music that takes you deep into the underworld.
Having played classical piano since the age of six, it wasn’t until Sola first heard Nina Simone that she truly found her voice. She then went on to study music at university in New York, where she started DJing and producing her own beats.
Having achieved her first ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Music Introducing airplay back in July with single ‘Oh My Love’, Sola is set to release her new EP ‘Mami Wata’ in September. Named after a water spirit widely celebrated across Africa, it draws on her Nigerian heritage and themes of the underworld. The title track captures this, and demonstrates just how evocative and exciting this artist can be.
