The symphonies of Sibelius cast a long shadow over English composers – none more so than Moeran who struggled with the genre. Like Sibelius, Moeran was an active folk-song collector, and he imbued the beauty of the English countryside and its music in the Sinfonietta whilst also giving the work a rhythmic drive reminiscent of Walton. The work epitomises English music at the mid-point of the 20th Century.
