Shostakovich’s 12th symphony – ‘The Year 1917’ - is a programmatic work in that it tries to describe an event, in this case the Russian Revolution, with music rather than words. Its four movements are played without a break, and with its use of Russian folk and revolutionary songs, and a triumphal feel of the last movement, it’s a work typical of Shostakovich's symphonic output.
