Jo Durrant Interview with Owen Gower of Dr Jenner's House
Dr Edward Jenner from Berkeley is credited with saving more lives than any other person thanks to his discovery of the smallpox vaccine. On 14 May 1796 Jenner performed the world's first vaccination and on 8 May 1980 the World Health Organisation declared that smallpox had been eradicated. It remains the only human disease to be wiped out by human intervention.
Now the museum dedicated to public health and Dr Jenner's story is facing an uncertain future. Museum Manager of Dr Jenner's House, Museum and Garden in Berkeley, Owen Gower has been talking to Jo Durrant about Jenner's legacy and the crowd funding efforts.
