The spaceman of Afghanistan
The first Afghan cosmonaut went to space on a Soviet research mission in 1988. Abdul Ahad Momand spent nine days on the Mir space station with a Russian crew, in a symbolic moment for the Soviet war in Afghanistan. But their mission almost ended in tragedy when a computer malfunction threatened their return to earth.
