Ai Weiwei: UK’s Huawei decision ‘short-sighted’

The decision to allow Huawei to provide a limited amount of technology for the UK’s 5G network is “short-sighted”, the Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei has said.

The company is a “state run, a military type of a company which can have a potential danger to Western security, UK security,” he told ˿ Hardtalk’s Stephen Sackur.

Huawei has always denied it would assist the Chinese government in helping it spy on one of their clients.

The firm’s founder has said he would rather “shut the company down” rather than take part in such activities.
