Proposals to allow people in Scotland to self-declare their gender are being considered by the Scottish Government.

Currently if people want to legally change gender then they need to show medical evidence of gender dysphoria and prove they鈥檝e lived in their acquired gender for at least 2 years.

Proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act have been welcomed by transgender campaigners who believe it would make the process less intrusive but some feminists have argued it could threaten women-only spaces.

There is a split in the SNP about whether to go ahead with these changes. The Scottish Government say reforming the legislation remains a key priority.
