Being trans in opera
In the past, both operatic voices and on-stage expressions of gender were fluid and non-binary. But offstage, the opera world can still be quite rigid in its understanding of gender. So what's life like for trans artists working in opera today?
Music Matters speaks to four trans-identifying opera singers about their experiences: non-binary mezzo CN Lester, trans male tenor Holden Madagame, trans female baritone Lucia Lucas (pictured) and non-binary soprano Ella Taylor.
