Groundhog Day Revisited. Again.

Thousands of people gathered Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, this weekend for Groundhog Day, the annual event in which Phil the groundhog makes his prediction on how long winter will last.

Fortunately this year, Phil predicts an early spring, but this curious event was made world famous in 1993 by the film of the same name. But was originally intended as a romantic comedy, has become a rich source of scholarly study, interpreted as an allegory for various religious beliefs and even psychoanalysis.
Ryan Gilbey, film critic for The Guardian and The New Statesman, and author of the BFI Film Classics book on Groundhog Day, discusses the film鈥檚 popularity and many interpretations.
