The Real Green Book
The Oscar-nominated film Green Book opened in the UK this weekend. Based on a true story, the plot follows the travails of jazz pianist Don Shirley during a tour through the southern American states in the 1960s, accompanied by an Italian-American bouncer Tony Vallelonga, who acts as Shirley's driver and bodyguard.
But the Green Book of the title is in fact a symbol of a dark chapter in America's history, as it was a guide for African American motorists during the civil rights era to the hotels, B and Bs and hostelries that would accept their custom and help them avoid harassment or worse. American novelist and political activist, Candace Allen discusses the origins of the real Green Book with Gordon Brewer.
