Neo-Authoritarianism: the New Oppression

Where Central and Eastern European states were once at the vanguard of the spread of Western-style democracy following the fall of the Berlin Wall, many have embraced populist administrations that appear set on taking them back to the autocracies of old.
But rather than employing the strong-arm oppressive tactics of the Soviet era, these 鈥榠lliberal democracies鈥 are subverting the institutions of the state to entrench their position, claiming that it is the popular will of the people.
Professor Matthew Feldman, Director of the Centre for the Analysis of the Radical Right at Teeside University, examines whether this slide back into one-party state can be stopped.
