Celebrating Diwali with Sheera
Jainism is one of the oldest religions in the world. They keep to a strict, lacto-vegetarian diet that's almost vegan and is motivated by the Jain principle of non-violence.
Priyanka Shah is a Jain food blogger from the US. Here she shows us how to make her version of Sheera, a sweet dish that's traditionally eaten at Diwali. It's a festival of lights that celebrates the victory of good over evil and the dawning of a new year, enjoyed by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup semolina
1/2 cup almond flour
1 cup sugar (1/2 brown sugar + 1/2 white sugar)
1/2 cup ghee, butter, or vegan substitute
2 cups milk or nut milk of choice for vegan version
1-2 tsp ground cardamom
A pinch of saffron threads
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1/4 cup cashews
1/4 golden raisins
