Scotland, Slamannan and the Argylls

The little Falkirkshire village of Slamannan was once a mighty powerhouse of mining and when the First World War came, its men heard the call but they also had to reckon with pit owners who laid men off. So many miners joined, that they dominated the culture of the local battalion.

Euan Loarridge is researching a PhD at Glasgow University on how battalions form community and culture and he's looked into the 10th battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the mining community around Stirling and Falkirk. Alec Buchanan is a local historian whose grandfather Andrew Kane was a miner who served in the Argylls. Together they explore mining, Slamannan and the Argylls in WW1 with presenter Susan Morrison.
