The Orthodox Church in Ukraine
The Orthodox Church in Ukraine wants to separate from the mother Church in Russia. The context is political. For the last four years, Ukraine - independent since the break-up of the USSR - has been fighting Russian backed rebels in the eastern part of the country. The Bishops of the Ecumenical Patriarchate have been meeting this weekend in Instanbul to discuss the issue.
Roisin McAuley spoke to Thomas Bremer, Professor of Eastern Churches Studies at M眉nster University, about the significance of the bid for independence, and asked him to explain the present relationship between the different branches of the Orthodox Church.
