Super mosquito helps to wipe out dengue fever
Scientists in Australia say they have managed to protect a large urban area from the dengue virus transmitted by mosquitoes.
Captive-bred mosquitoes carrying the bacteria Wolbachia were released into the city of Townsville, in Queensland and by mating with local mosquitoes they spread the bacteria which works to hinder the transmission of the disease.
The study could help prevent infections worldwide.
Professor Scott O'Neill is the director of the World Mosquito Program at Monash University in Australia explained why the Wolbachia bacteria was so useful.
