The Fix: 'I’m scared to come down because I’m scared of pain now’
In January 2016 a woman we are calling Karen had an accident. The painkillers she needed to take were strong and she says that the side effects of her drugs are so severe that she has memory problems and suicidal thoughts. She fears she will never return to the responsible managerial job she had before. She can’t come off the tablets because she is frightened of pain and gets anxious before the prescription is renewed. She tells her story to Milly Chowles as part of our series The Fix: Women and Addiction.
