How John Barnes' celebrity status got him to Nelson Mandela's house
Former England winger John Barnes recalled how his celebrity status got him to Nelson Mandela's house.
While filming a documentary in Johannesburg, Barnes asked Mandela for an interview: "He wrote down his address and said 'come tomorrow, two o'clock."
Barnes and his crew had trouble finding the house, when they stopped and asked a man if he knew where it was.
"He shook his head and kept walking," said the ex-England star, "he looked in the back and he saw me. He said: 'are you John Barnes?' I said 'Yeah'. He said: 'Nelson Mandela lives first left, second right, number three.'"
