A World without Robert Burns?

The world will join Scotland in celebrating the life and work of the poet Robert Burns. His influence on Scottish culture and identity are immeasurable 鈥 not least the economic value to tourism. But what if Burns had never put pen to paper? What if he'd simply remained the son of a poor farmer? What do we lose in terms of cultural collateral and who would take his place in our literary canon? Gordon Brewer spoke to Dr Pauline Mackay, lecturer in Robert Burns Studies at Glasgow University.
