Pete and Les - Fifty Years of Friendship
Pete and Les met on their first day at primary school. A punch-up a few days later didn't stop them becoming firm friends - which they remain to this day. Although their paths diverged as teenagers - Les won a basketball scholarship to America before pursuing a degree in London, while Pete went off to try a kibbutz on a whim - and ended up living in Israel for around eighteen years. Les is now a sociology professor at Goldsmiths University, and lives with his wife in South London - he has three grown up children. Pete also has three children - two are grown up and living in Israel, his youngest lives with him and his partner back near his and Les' childhood home. He works for London Buses. Their conversation focused on their shared childhood and schooling and a reflection on how they have remained close through all those years, and how unusual it is to still have a childhood friend.
