They may not have Facebook, Instagram or Twitter but Japanese snow monkeys do have social networks. This mostly involves grooming, picking off fleas and lice – whether in small cliques or large family groups. New research ties in these monkeys’ social networks with the spread of diseases and parasites. And what they’ve found could also be applied to the spread of disease in humans.
