In recent months, lots of people have talked about the rise of what's been called populist politics. The victory of Donald Trump in America, the Brexit vote in the UK, the rise of Geert Wilders in The Netherlands and and Marine Le Pen in France - all have been said to be examples of the rise of populism.

But what does the term really mean?

Dr. Stijn van Kessel is a Lecturer in Politics at Loughborough University and has written a book on the subject called Populist Parties in Europe - Agents of Discontent?

He's been talking to Lawrence Pollard and Nomia Iqbal, who asked Dr Kessel if he could define the term.
