Dr Yaba Blay is among many dark skinned women who have come across this phrase in some form or another at least once in their lives. Being dark was at the forefront of her experience as a child - She even remembers not being invited to a birthday party because of her complexion. The culprit, Dr Blay says, is a culture that values whiteness.
