Sarah Franklin on Alexandra Heminsley's Leap In and Scratch, edited by Manjula Martin

David Prever is joined by writer, editor and lecturer in publishing at Oxford Brookes University, Sarah Franklin. They discuss the books president Barack Obama has been reading during his time in office - and wondering where he found the time? Sarah recommends Leap In by Alexandra Heminsley, which was featured recently on the 成人快手 Woman's Hour programme. It's a follow-up to Heminsley's memoir Running Like A Girl. In Leap In, Heminsley conquers her fear of swimming in open water and discovers the peace it brings her as she undergoes gruelling IVF treatment. "Poignant, funny, and instructive". Sarah's second selection is Scratch, edited by Manjula Martin - a book of essays that "will resonate with everyone who made 'finally write my novel' their New Year's Resolution". It's a collection of essays in which authors discuss how and whether it's possible to make a living these days as a writer. It features big names such as Jonathan Franzen, Nick Hornby and Cheryl Strayed as well as a host of others. The essays are "fascinating insights".
