Police Sgt: phone driving offences are ‘more spontaneous’
Police in England and Wales have launched their biggest crackdown ever on drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel.
Gwent Police stepped up its patrols a week ago, but Sergeant Leighton Healan says drivers who are caught using their phones should still be treated differently to those who are caught drink-driving.
He told Nicky Campbell: “Drink driving is a personal choice. You go out that evening, you’ve got the car with you and you have that drink. With a mobile phone it’s less pre-planned. It’s spontaneous. The phone rings and you decide to pick it up and answer it.â€
