HMIC: Increase in domestic abuse reports 'good news'

Police in England and Wales are on the verge of being "overwhelmed" by "staggering" increases in reports of domestic abuse according to a report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary.

Her Majesty鈥檚 Inspector of Constabulary Zoe Billingham told the Today programme that the 31% increase in reports between 2013 and 2015 is "good news" because victims are coming forward.

"Police and crime commissioners have made domestic abuse an absolute priority and they are actively encouraging victims to come forward," Ms Billingham said, acknowledging the stress this placed on specialist units.

"They are getting to the point of becoming overwhelmed," she said.
