Saving Mexico's babies

'Parteras' are traditional Mexican midwives; their skill at delivering babies has been honed over centuries. But during emergencies, lack of resources and infrastructure can have serious consequences especially in remote places like in the southernmost state of Chiapas, which has among the highest childbirth mortality rates in the country. Photographer Janet Jarman traveled extensively through Chiapas last year, and documented an initiative to get midwives and hospitals in the region working together.
