Berlin Marathon: 3 Days Before Unification
Thomas Steffens, now the Berlin Marathon spokesperson, ran the marathon in 1990, three days before the reunification of Germany. Entry for that race was massively expanded to a then-record 25 thousand. They ran into East Berlin, with checkpoints still in place, and back again with the finish moved to the Brandenburg Gate.
