Two thousand years ago the city of Palmyra was one of the most important cultural centres of the Middle East, standing at the crossroads of civilisations, adorned with great works of art. It was rediscovered in the seventeenth century after centuries of obscurity, and since then the city has drawn the admiration of generations of travellers and archaeologists. This week, some of the site's most beautiful and iconic monuments were destroyed by the so-called Islamic State group.

Marius Kociejowski poet and author of 'Syria: Through Writers' Eyes' looks back at rich history of Palmyra, which has offered inspiration for writers and travellers over the centuries.
