In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf region -- and left most of the city of New Orleans underwater. It was America's costliest natural disaster, and left 1,833 people dead. New Orleans is slowly getting back on its feet, but some of the poorest areas are still marked by abandoned properties and lost livelihoods.
