Merritt: 'They told me I'd never run again'

American sprint-hurdler and 2012 Olympic Gold medalist Aries Merritt opens up about how his life was turned upside down by a debilitating Kidney disease.

After winning gold at the Olympics and World Indoor Championships in 2012, Merritt was hospitalised in 2013 where they discovered his kidney function was down to 15%.

Speaking to Ade Adedoyin, Aries said: "They told me I'd never run again, my world ended... but here I am running."

Merritt has struggled to replicate his 2012 form since returning to the sport and said it was "mentally scarring" to not fulfill his potential but told Sporthour he's competing at the World Athletics Championships for his "mental sanity".

The 30-year-old described making the details of his illness public "felt like a weight had been lifted", but admitted that "this could potentially be my last championship if the surgery doesn't go well".
