"A kind of joie de vivre" - Manchester's slums in the 1960s
The late Manchester street photographer Shirley Baker captured scenes of family life in some of the poorest neighbourhoods during the 1960s. Rather than depicting sadness and deprivation, however, the images show children revelling in their freedom "in a way that the uptight middle classes couldn't." Anna Douglas, curator of a forthcoming exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery in London, explains how Shirley Baker celebrated life with her lens.
