βTheyβre not going to crush usβ β Radio 1 controller on Appleβs radio ambitions
Ben Cooper on Appleβs latest challenge to music radio
One of the biggest challenges to music radio is launched by Apple later today.
Their new app called βApple Musicβ will stream music online 24 hours a day. And itβs gone even further and created a radio station.
Former Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe will host the first programme on Beats One.
Drake, Pharrell and Sir Elton John will all present shows.
³ΙΘΛΏμΚΦ Radio 1 and 1Xtra Controller Ben Cooper accepted that Apple had changed the way we live our lives, but said: "Theyβre not going to crush us β this is a good thing for the radio industry."
βRadio 1 breaks British music - I donβt believe Apple can do that as well as Radio 1,β he said, citing Florence and the Machine as an example.
The authenticity of Radio 1βs presenters was another of its selling points, he added.
