Banished from Baku

After Azerbaijan's capital Baku opened the inaugural European Games with a ceremony costing more than double that of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the competition has been overshadowed by criticism of the country itself and its human rights record.

Many are questioning why Azerbaijan was awarded the games, and whether a government accused of a variety of human rights abuses can be trusted to instil the sporting values promoted by the European Olympic Committee.

A number of journalists and officials from some campaign groups have even been barred from entering the country.

On world refugee day, Sportshour spoke to writer and journalist Emin Milli who, born in Azerbaijan, was imprisoned in 2009 for two and a half years for his critical views about the government.

He was released after serving 16 months of his sentence and went to live in Germany, from where Rob Bonnet spoke to him about his experience.
