Tunisia, Supporting Leicestershire Families and July Fortnight.

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

Last Friday, the world once again witnessed a horrific terror attack when a gunman entered a hotel resort and gunned down dozens of people. 38 tourists are thought to have been murdered- most of them British. The Foreign Office have confirmed this morning that Leicester couple Ray and Angela Fisher were among those killed. At midday a minutes silence will be held. A number of mosques are excepted to participate, and many will also remember the victims during Friday prayers. The Queen will pause during HER engagement in Glasgow - and events at Wimbledon and the Henley Regatta will be delayed. One woman who will pay particular attention to it is Sangita Chauhan from Groby in Leicestershire. She had six members of her family in Sousse- including her daughter and son-in-law were spending their first anniversary there. more than 800 of Leicestershire's most troubled families have been dramatically helped to turn themselves around by a scheme claiming a 100 per cent success rate. It's known as Supporting Leicestershire Families - or SLF. It's run by the county council along with the police, probation services, as well as health, education and employment services. Launched a couple of years ago, it's aim is simple - to provide much-needed tailored support for families struggling with a catalogue of social menaces - from drug abuse to domestic violence, debt and joblessness to persistent truancy. It's been praised at least once by the Prime Minister. Now if you're of a certain vintage you may have taken your holidays during the annual July fortnight - at this time each year the factories of Leicester and many across the county would close for two weeks and thousands of people would head to the East coast for their annual holidays. Exactly fifty years ago, the fortnight took place for the first time in July having moved from its traditional place in August. It seems incredible now that manufacturing industry could shut up shop for two whole weeks but it was an important part of the working year.
