Mark Kermode reviews West. At the height of the Cold War and in the wake of her boyfriend Wassilij’s death, Nelly Senff decides to take her young son Alexej across the Berlin Wall for a new life in the West. Hoping to leave her traumatic past behind, Nelly soon finds herself under the scrutiny of the Allied Secret Service. As they start asking questions about Wassilij – was he a spy? Is he really dead? – Nelly is forced to choose between uncovering the truth about her former lover and her hopes for a better future for Alexej.
