Love and liberation – Phyllis and Werner
During the Second World War, the Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by German forces.
Phyllis lived in Sark.
Werner was a German soldier.
He was also a medical orderly, who cared for the local inhabitants of the island.
When Phyllis got tonsillitis in 1943, he treated her.
It was the start of a romance which led to their marriage in 1948.
