Reporting the Burundi Coup
Was the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ slower in its reporting of the attempted Burundi coup than social media updates – and if so, why? And, listeners react to a special edition of Global Beats.
Global listeners have been following the breaking news of the Burundi coup in the capital city Bujumbura. The increasing attacks caused some independent radio stations and media houses to be shut down. As a result, many flocked to social media for updated information. The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service did continue their broadcasts, but some listeners noticed that the coverage was unfolding at a slower rate than their social media updates. Editor of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Africa Service discusses the verification processes used by his team and how this impacts their reporting.
Also, listeners explain why they were moved by a special edition of Global Beats which focused on an instrument that everyone uses – the human voice.
