Councillor: Labour party became 'complacent' in Rotherham
A senior Labour party councillor in Rotherham has admitted that the party became "complacent" because of its political dominance in the town.
His comments come one day after six of his colleagues, the entire council cabinet, resigned en masse following a report into child abuse in the South Yorkshire town.
In the first interview a Labour party councillor has given since the report was published, Councillor Chris Read said that he believed the number of victims in the town "might" be more than the 1400 suggested by Professor Alexis Jay last year.
"I don't know what the true number is. 1400 to me seems entirely possible. Sarah Champion the Rotherham MP has suggested it could be more than that and I don't know, that could be true."
