Auschwitz survivor 'heard people dying' in gas chambers

Kitty Hart Moxon who spent two years in Auschwitz recalls her experiences in the Nazi concentration camp where more than a million Jews were murdered.

The 27 of January is the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Kitty Hart Moxon survived two years in the concentration camp.

She told 5 live鈥檚 Adrian Goldberg her memories of life and death in Auschwitz, where more than a million Jews were murdered.

"Some of the huts had a thousand women, you couldn't take your clothes off, because if you did you never saw them again; not even whatever you had on your feet. So you were sleeping like sardines," said Kitty Hart Moxon of everyday life in the camp.

Kitty Hart Moxon was part of a group moved to a separate camp to sort through the possessions dumped when people arrived at Auschwitz. As her hut was next to one of the gas chambers, she heard people dying:

鈥淲e actually observed the actual killing. There were special SS, who climbed a ladder and actually poured the gas through an opening in the roof of this building, and soon after he emptied this tin of gas, you could hear people dying, you could hear people screaming inside, and after about 20 minutes they were dead and then they would open up this gas chamber, and very often we could actually smell the gas,鈥 she said.
