Christmas 1914 saw not only a remarkable series of truces on the Western Front, but also a determination by both sides to remember seasonal traditions - even in the trenches.
Dr Timothy Bowman, of the University of Kent, reflects on how the first Christmas of World War One was a time to boost morale and celebrate patriotism.
