Antibiotics in agriculture
We have been warned for a long time now that we have been abusing antibiotics to such an extent that we risk being plunged back into a medical dark age when treatable infections and minor injuries could once again kill. Scientists, politicians and health care officials have been meeting at the Royal Society of Medicine this week to try and work out what to do about it. ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ science correspondent Tom Feilden reports.
Are we going back to the Moon?
Settling the question of the Moon’s origin seems likely to require more data – which, in turn, requires more missions. ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Science correspondent Jonathan Amos tells us about the rationale and future prospects for a return to the Moon, including the Google Lunar XPrize.
Childhood obesity
Malcolm Brabant reports on a Danish paediatrician who claims his pilot project has made a significant breakthrough in the battle against childhood obesity. The scheme, in the town of Holbaek, has treated 1,900 cases and helped 70 per cent of them to maintain normal weight by adjusting twenty elements of patients’ lifestyles..
New frog species
Scientists have confirmed that a frog found living in New York City wetlands is a new species. Remote regions, this so-far unnamed type of leopard frog was first heard croaking on Staten Island. Jeremy Feinberg of Rutgers University in New Jersey noticed the frogs there had a call he had never heard before.
Trauma
The kind of trauma care you may receive after an accident has evolved over the last century, from the battlefields of the Somme to the state of the art air-ambulance service – and we asked Kevin Fong, an accident and emergency doctor, to investigate that transformation.
Consciousness
And Claudia talks to neuro clinician Srivas Chennu whose team in Cambridge have found hidden brain signatures of consciousness in vegetative state patients. The newly discovered network of robust brain cells means that doctors could now have a diagnostic tool to improve clinical assessment and help identify patients who might be covertly aware despite being unable to communicate
